Profile

De Volkskrant was founded in 1919 as a weekly newspaper for the Catholic labor movement. In the 1960s the newspaper developed into an independent daily newspaper for left-wing intellectuals. It is a left-wing liberal, supra regional quality paper that increasingly aims to reach well-paid and younger readers. The weekend magazine covers a lot of lifestyle topics.

Translated into English, the newspaper's name means «The People's Newspaper». From its name, it is clear that the newspaper was supposed to become something of an information intermediary between the party and the people.
